Lately, I’ve been getting the feeling my house is trying to tell me something. As I walk from room to room, some rooms are chilly, others comfortable, still others are downright stuffy! I realized that I’m never completely comfortable. Oh, and another thing. I keep hearing about programming my thermostat to save energy while I’m not at home. I’d love to do this, but my thermostat is about 100 years old. No way I can program it!
Hmmmmm…. it may be time to consider upgrading my system. And Ricotta Heating & Air is a great place to start. They will come to my home and give me a recommendation on a new heating system that fit my older home’s needs and my budget. Plus – from now through December 31, 2010, I can qualify for federal tax incentives.
If you live in an older St. Louis home, Ricotta recommends checking out EPA’s ENERGY STAR Home Energy Yardstick to compare your household’s energy use to others across the country. For instance
- If every one of your rooms seems to be a different temperature, inadequate air sealing or insufficient insulation could be the culprit. No matter how efficient your heating and cooling system is, if your home is not properly sealed and insulated, you will not be as comfortable and your system will have to work harder.
- When your heating & cooling system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are going up, this signals a time to act. In addition to the rise in energy costs, the age and condition of your heating and cooling equipment means it’s become less efficient than it should be. If your system is more than 10 years old, think replacement rather than fixing. Over the span of just a few years, this is the better investment. Today’s ENERGY STAR efficiency ratings give you the information you need to make a good decision.
- If you are setting and leaving your thermostat set at one constant temperature, you could be missing a great energy-saving opportunity. A programmable thermostat adjusts your home’s temperature at times when you’re regularly away or sleeping – and saves you dollars.
